Special Education Needs Offer
The Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo) at Bearwood Primary and Nursery school is Mrs Lyster. Appointments to see Mrs Lyster can be made in person, by phone or e-mail via the school office. Please be aware that Mrs Lyster’s SENCO working days are currently Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) are sometimes identified before they start school and liaison between pre-school settings. Others are initially identified by assessments carried out by school staff before being placed on the Special Needs Register.
Following guidance set out in the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice, they are then set individual targets and provision to help meet these targets are identified on appropriate Individual Education Plans. Their progress is then tracked to ensure that they are making progress in line with all pupils. Support from other agencies will be requested if required. Children can be on the SEN register for a short while whilst they receive some intervention or throughout their schooling, this depends on their level of need. Parents will be kept informed and consulted regarding any decisions relating to SEN children by their child’s class teacher and/or SENCo.
At Bearwood, we support all children through high quality first teaching – this is our universal offer. If a child requires further support in addition to this due to their individual specific needs then they will receive early intervention via a graduated response often before being placed on the SEND register.
